UPDATE: Love Me or Hate Me

Morning, y'all! It's Sunday, one of my favorite days of the week. I love our church and I love worshiping with my brothers and sisters in Christ (This morning I happen to be worshiping with the ones that are 4 years old)! Before I go, I wanted give you a quick update on my post from yesterday, Love Me or Hate Me.

Here's the part I want to update y'all on...

Speaking of pale white girl... Y'all! I cannot get my legs to tan to save my life. What the heck?! We've been going to the pool for a couple of hours every other day to let the boys swim, and no tan legs. I'm pretty sure when I was younger my legs would tan. Even wearing white shorts they still look albino white! What happened to 1/16 of me that is American Indian?

I know how concerned y'all must have been about my corpse colored legs! Bless your heart, I really hope you didn't lose too much sleep over the issue!

I just had to tell y'all that I figured it out! You  HAVE to scrub off your lizard skin first!!! It's that simple! Then just moisturize really well and bam, you will have that sun tan burn that you've been working so hard for!

So grab you some sugar scrub and go nuts on that lizard skin!

Until next time! -K

Love Me or Hate Me

****This turned into a radom thoughts post. Too much bouncing around in this little brain of mine.****

“Love me or hate me, both are in my favor…If you love me, I'll always be in your heart…If you hate me, I'll always be in your mind.”
 William Shakespeare

This should be the company motto for Netflix, because I am quite certain I am not the only one who has a love/hate relationship with this piece of technology. They crushed my sweet mommy heart when they removed EV-ER-Y Wiggle movie!! Why?!? Must be a bunch of single men running the show! But I must admit that Netflix is one of my best babysitters and is much of the reason I get a daily shower.

Brayden hasn't figured out the whole "search" thing yet. He says "Look for Petter Pan". I type P-A-N and nothing comes up. He freaks out because I didn't enter the whole thing. This is where the grace of God helps me not to say a string of curse words. But what do I know? I mean, he is 5 WHOLE years old and I am only 28. Obviously, he knows more about Netflix than I do! Here's a picture for you...

I cut my hair off yesterday. Yeah, I know, there wasn't much there to cut in the first place, but it's definitely shorter. I had her chop off the stylish longer bangs that I so stylishly pinned back with a clip everyday. Think Halle Berry short hair on a pale white girl's body.

So yesterday I made homemade pot roast, mashed potatoes and field peas. By "homemade" I mean I put the packaged roast  and canned peas in the microwave and poured potato flakes into a pan... in my my very own home = homemade. If you ask nicely I'll send you the recipe. Contrary to how it sounds, it was actually really good for a quick meal. Even Asher loved it! See?

Brayden, on the other hand, did not...

He said, "My belly hurts REALLY bad... because of YOU!" Yes, my precious little sugar dumplin... your horrible mother and father will continue to make you eat what we cook, because contrary to your belief, it's not healthy for you to survive on Frosted Flakes and Mac-n-Cheese.

Sooooo, when Brayden is not complaining about the voluntary IBS I have inflicted upon him, he is asking for a sister. Yep. I'm not sure why, but I never really expected this from him. I remember I used to beg for a brother or sister when I was little but that's because I was an only child for 12 years. I just didn't see this coming! He's also been praying every night, "God, thank you for today. Thank your for your grace and mercy and all you do for us. Please give me a sister."

God, I know you have a sense of humor, but if I turn up pregnant after having my tubes double tied (according to Dr. Rich) I'm seriously not going to be laughing.

My sciatic nerve has been killing me for a week! It's made me lazy and I have not run my sprints all week. Shameful, I know!

And last random thought.... I've lived in Georgia all my life and this morning was the first time ever that I have eaten a fresh peach for breakfast. Ain't it purtty? It even had a cute little peach dimple. :)

Until next time! - K

Take THAT @LL!!

Happy Wednesday Y'all! Let's call today Wash Wednesday, because today I am going to share with you how to wash your clothes for $0.01 a load!! Yep, you read right! It's the only thing that brings a smile to my face as tackle these:

x 3

Notice how well I do at sorting like colors. And yes, those are IKEA bags! They make awesome laundry bags and they also allow me to dream of filling them with all kinds of inexpensive IKEA goodness while I actually fill them with stained shirts, ripped jeans, mismatched socks and little boy underwear (with skid marks).

Like my toenail polish? It's called Coral Stone.

About a year ago, I heard some of my super-mom friends talking about making their own laundry detergent. I thought, "Pshhhh, woman please! Just go pick yourself up some good stuff at the store and stop being Laura Ingalls!" For the record, I used to mock coupon queens the same way... and Little House on the Prairie used to be one of my favorite shows. Well friends, I have seen the light. I now make my own laundry detergent and (when I'm good) I coupon. While I'm at it, I will tell you I also make my own candles and my own soap. What's my motivation? First, price. I can't stand paying 10+ times more for something I could make myself. Second, enjoyment. I actually enjoy making these things. It gives me a sense of accomplishment!

So let's get started so you can be well on your way to never ever buying a $12 container of laundry detergent again!

Here's what you need to pick up at the store or find in your cabinets:

Washing Soda

As you can see, I bought the Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda. This can be found in the laundry aisle (I found mine at Wal-Mart, home of the devil). WASHING Soda folks! Not BAKING Soda! Washing Soda helps to remove dirt and odor from your clothes.

Borax Powder

I'm pretty sure this 20 Mule Team is the only brand of Borax you will find (Once I again, I found mine in the laundry aisle of Hades, aka Wal-Mart). This helps keep whites white and it also helps to make those little boy undies smell clean. Apparently you can use it for other stuff, too.

Fels-Naptha Soap

I guess this is basically old fashioned Shout. It's a hard bar of laundry soap that smells fresh and clean but a bit odd. You should be able to find this around the above items. Fels-Naptha also helps in the cleaning and stain removal process.

Irish Spring Soap (or whatever you prefer)

I've always liked the smell of Irish Spring, so I went with it. You can use Ivory or any of the other simple soaps. Of course this will be in the soap and body wash aisle. Don't forget to pick up deodorant while you're in that section, because I haven't figured out how to make that yet. :)

1 Gallon Container X2

I used Gatorade and a Hawaiian Punch containers. They are each a gallon and are reusable... and they cost me no extra money... and they would have just been thrown away. Hey, look at me saving the environment!! I think it's pretty obvious that you will use these to put your laundry detergent into.

That's it for stuff you need (other than water, a medium sauce pan and a stove/hotplate)! Now lets get down to business and start the process. Depending on how you grate your soap and how fast your stove heats up water, the entire process should take about 30-45 minutes. Trust me, the time is worth the savings!

Here are the amounts you will use of each of the above ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Washing Soda
  • 1/2 cup Borax
  • 1/4 bar Fels-Naptha Soap
  • 1/2 bar Irish Spring Soap

Step #1
Grate 1/4 bar of Fels Naptha and 1/2 bar of Irish Spring into a medium sauce pan. The best way to do this is with a regular cheese grater or one that has a wheel that you turn. I couldn't find my grater (must be boxed away from our recent move), so I used a knife to slice off bits and pieces. I don't recommend doing it that way unless you have to.

Step #2
Add 6 cups of water to the grated soap.
Heat on medium to high until the grated soap is completely melted. Try not to let it boil.

Step #3
Once the soap is melted, stir in 1/2 cup of Washing Soda and 1/2 cup of Borax. Keep the pan on the stove and stir until all powder is dissolved. This should thicken your mixture a good bit.

Step #4
Put 2 cups of hot water into each of your 1 gallon containers. Take your soap mixture off the stove. Slowly pour half into each container.

Step #5
Fill up the rest of the container with cool water. Replace cap and gently mix the gallons by turning them upside down a couple of times. Let the mixture sit for about 24 hours. Use 1/2 cup per load.

Your detergent should look like lime sherbet punch gone wrong. :)

That's it!!! You're done!!! Now pat yourself on the back and go fetch the washboard. Kidding!

Just a heads up, your homemade laundry detergent will not be the same consistency as store-bought detergent, nor will it produce as many suds... that's perfectly okay. Your detergent might be kind of a thin gel and it might have some gel clumps, but rest assured it will clean your clothes just fine. Another thing you will notice is that your clothes will be pretty neutral smelling when they come out. If you would like your clothes to be more scented, then you will want to add some natural essential oils. You can find these online at various places or possibly in some local health food stores. I would probably go with Lavender. I've washed with this mixture for a while now, and I honestly can't tell a difference from the expensive stuff other than the smell.

Let's Do the Math
If you're like me, when I told you that I would show you how to wash your clothes for $0.01 a load you raised one eyebrow and said, "Yeah, right!" Well here's the math...

Using 1/2 cup per load, you will be able to get 64 loads out of this 2 gallon batch.

The Washing Soda was $2.23 for 55oz. So, $2.23 divided by 55 = $0.04. I weighed 1/2 cup of Washing Soda and it was around 4.2oz. 4.2oz multiplied by $0.04 = $0.17.

The Borax was $3.27 for 76oz. $3.27 divided by 76 = $0.04. 1/2 cup of Borax weighs about 3.5oz. 3.4oz multiplied by $0.04 = $0.14

Fels-Naptha runs about $1.12 per bar. You use 1/4 bar, so $1.12 divided by 4 = $0.28

An 8 pack of Irish Spring was $4.27 making each bar $0.53. You will use 1/2 bar so $0.53 divided by 2 = $0.26

$0.17 + $0.14 + $0.28 + $0.26 = $0.85

$0.85 / 64 loads = $0.0132 or ONE CENT per load!!

You're welcome!

Whew! All that math wore me out! I sure hope this is useful for somebody! Now you too can smile while you dig the lent out of the trap because you know that lent cost you a heck of a lot less money!

Until next time! -K

None Of Us Would Be Here Without Our Dads, So Thanks... A Day Late!

September 26, 2006... the day that Lance and I became parents (Well, actually it was some day back in early January 2006 but we won't discuss that here). I will never forget this day. It's crazy how you can love someone so much so instantly.

Being a parent is one of the most amazing adventures and one of the most difficult challenges in life. I think becoming parents is part of the reason we have come to believe in the Doctrine's of Grace. We have definitely witnessed the whole "total depravity" part and it is DEFINITELY God's grace that we are not alcoholics. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, you can go to my other blog and read about it here)

Yesterday was Father's Day. I was going to come up with some silly reason why I saved this post for today but let's just be honest, I didn't finish it yesterday. I'm okay with that. I would rather not get lost in all the Father's Day posts anyway. :)

So, this is me publicly saying that my husband is one of the best dads on the planet. Our boys love him so much. I thought it would be sweet to share the drawings the boys drew yesterday, so below is how we each see Lance...

Brayden's view

Apparently, Brayden see's his dad as a super villain. I mean, look at those eyebrows and that sly grin. Nice goatee even though Lance has a full beard. Of course Brayden is Batman. What is it they say? Always be yourself... unless you can be Batman. Always be Batman.

Asher's view

Seems as though Asher has really picked up on how much weight Lance has lost recently (I'll touch on the weight loss in another post fairly soon).

Mommy's View (When she closes her eyes)

Like Brayden, I'm a fan of Batman too. ;-)

Happy Father's Day plus 1 to all the dads out there!

There's Always A First

Hi Y'all! (Yes, I'm a southern girl and we say "y'all")

To be completely honest I've been sitting here staring at my keyboard like a goober for about 10 minutes trying to figure out where to start. (Obviously the best thing I could come up with was "Hi Y'all")

I kind of feel like the first post of a blog is like a first kiss. You're always a tad anxious about it, but you know you want to get it under your belt. You don't want it to be too long, because that might make you seem a bit desperate... but you don't want it to be too short and lack luster, because that might make you seem like you are unexperienced. Then, of course, you want to make sure that you aren't too sloppy and all over the place, because... uh... crazy. In the end you just have to go for it and hope for the best.

For the record (in case my boys ever read this) I do not condone kissing before marriage... girls are gross... unless they are your wife... and that will be arranged... and subject to background check.

Alrighty, well lets get started. I guess the best place to start is by telling you about my family so you know why I'm slightly not sane (I'm not insane just slight NOT sane).

Thankfully, we just had our family pictures taken by my friend John Pyle, so you will actually see a picture of me that isn't from 1998. I'm usually behind the camera (hiding) so getting awesome pictures of our family was HUGE for us!

Me and My Love

Lance and I met when I was a sophomore in high school. I was 16 and he was 20.

Confession #1: I totally lied and told my parents he was 18.
Confession #2: He was really interested in my best friend but I was slick. Sorry babe!
Confession #3: I definitely have a box full of these...

Yes... time well spent in Computer Technology Class. I was an amazing writer straight from the start!

We got married 391 notes later in 2004. My pride will not allow me to continue this post without stating that Lance proposed to me at the top of a Spanish castle. *Smiles and bats eyelashes* I know, I know, so romantic! Well, I'm pretty sure that was God's way of preparing me for life full of red roses, massages, surprise getaways and poetic love notes. <--- That's me being sarcastic.

But seriously y'all, I love my man!

Me and My Boys
In 2006 we welcomed Brayden Edward into the world.

Brayden is proof that birth control is not perfect! I hope that scares some of you! He was stubborn like his momma and refused to turn so I was gutted like a fish... it was worth it. Bray is smart and creative. He loves to draw and act. He's also quite tenderhearted. He is a Daddy's boy!

In 2009 we grudgingly accepted Asher Elias into the world.

No, just kidding! He was lovingly welcomed, too. My pregnancy with Asher was pretty rough and wild. Now I know why. HE is rough and wild! He's also hilarious and brightens our day with his spunky personality. Asher is the child who will require many sets of stitches and probably a few casts over his lifetime. I've come to accept that. (Asher, sorry son, but I had to pick this picture for the contrast)

So that's our family in a nutshell! Of course there is PLENTY more to tell, but that's sort of what this blog is for. I wouldn't want to spoil it all for you, and so before I make this first post too long or sloppy, I'm going to call it quits.

Until next time! -K
